Diodes and Diode Bridge
The diode is the simplest semiconductor device, i.e. a single P-N connector. The diode conducts current only in one direction. This device has a low, ideally zero resistance in the direction of conduction, and a high, ideally infinite resistance in the direction of barrier. There are many diodes on the market (e.g. Schottki diode, Zener diode, rectifier diodes and rectifier bridges composed of them), which are characterized by various parameters that should be selected for a specific application. A diode bridge is a system of four (or more) diodes. This is a type of rectifier.
Transistors
A transistor is a three-electrode (less often four-electrode) semiconductor electronic component that amplifies an electrical signal. With it, you can safely turn on the flow of higher current. The IGBT is a bipolar insulated gate transistor. IGBTs are made of silicon. They are characterized by ease of control by changing the potential of the insulated gate, high breakdown voltage and switching speed.
Module IPM
IPM (Intelligent Power Module), i.e. intelligent power modules. These are relatively small devices that have very high performance. They are characterized by high speed and low power losses. The modules are made of IGBT or MOSFET transistors, improvement diodes, gate controllers and auxiliary elements. Sometimes IPM modules have built-in measuring resistors that provide control of the current flowing through individual branches of the bridge. Placing almost all the necessary elements in one housing reduces the size of the controller by almost half.
Thyristors, DIAC, TRIAC
A thyristor is a four-layer, three-terminal semiconductor device. It acts as a triggered valve that conducts current in one direction. The Triac is a five-layer, three-terminal semiconductor device that acts as a triggering AC valve. A diac is a two-way trigger diode. It is a three-layer, two-ended semiconductor device, designed for switching triacs.
